Wi-Fi-Enabled Devices to Exceed 1.9 Billion Units by 2014, Says In-Stat

Market Wire, July, 2010

The quest for connectivity continues to drive Consumer Electronics (CE) manufacturers to enable their products with Wi-Fi technology. The next 5 years will see an increase in the number of Wi-Fi-enabled devices, from over 500 million in 2009 to nearly 2 billion in 2014, according to In-Stat ( www.in-stat.com ). Devices leading the pace of adoption include Blu-ray players/recorders, e-readers, and digital televisions.

“The reality of 802.11n-enabled devices being available is that many of the technical issues that constrained Wi-Fi adoption in video-centric CE devices in the past have been remedied,” says Frank Dickson, VP of Research. “As a result, we expect the adoption of Wi-Fi in the living room to accelerate. Across all ‘digital living room’ consumer electronics, which includes set top boxes, game consoles, Blu-ray players, digital picture frames, among other devices, Wi-Fi-enabled devices will exceed 200 million units by 2014.

The research includes:

Mobile devices with Wi-Fi will still dominate shipments.
In 2013, shipments of mobile phones with embedded Wi-Fi are projected to exceed of a billion units.
E-readers Wi-Fi attach rates will increase from 3% in 2009 to 88% by 2014.
29 million Digital Picture frames will be shipped in 2014; 53% will be Wi-Fi-enabled.

Recent In-Stat research, ” Wireless LAN Market Estimates and Forecast by Device ” (#IN1004856WS), provides global shipment numbers for all CE Devices along with the penetration of Wi-Fi into these devices

Insurance Agent Survey Reveals Wish List for Carrier Agency Portals

Business Wire, July 12, 2010

All Roads Lead to Simplicity, Speed and Upload

BEDFORD, Mass. — Agents are pressured to quote business quickly and accurately. They
welcome easy-to-use tools that make their job easier and faster by
reducing manual tasks and redundant data entry and providing real-time
feedback and quoting when possible. A recent survey of senior insurance
agents, conducted by FirstBest
Systems, Inc., provider of insurance
software solutions that help Property & Casualty carriers write more
business and write better business, found that many agents have already
been using carrier portals and that its all about time. Agents
want real-time underwriter collaboration, upload/connectivity and
processing and ideally, a single system.

Forty insurance agents responded to the technology survey. More than 80%
of respondents work at agencies that write more than $10 million in
premiums annually. Nearly 50% were agency owners, and another 35% were
executive, senior-manager or division-head level. Seventy percent cited
commercial lines as comprising more than half of their business. Worth
noting, the majority of agents cited Workers Compensation and Commercial
Multi-Peril as the most significant commercial lines of business for
their agency today, as well as in the next three years.

Describing portal use today, all agents acknowledged using at least one
portal regularly. Nearly 50% said that their CSRs save several
hours daily by using electronic real-time carrier sites/portals
to submit and track the progress of applications. Half of the
respondents indicated that without a carrier portal, the average wait for
commercial-line (WC, BOP, CMP, specialty, commercial auto) quote
response can be up to several weeks. Few agents have Web-based
collaboration with carriers. Fifty-four percent of agents surveyed said
fewer than 25% of the carrier portals they use offer visibility
and collaboration into the commercial-lines submission process at any
time, from anywhere.

The survey also asked agents about the features and functionality they
want most from carrier agent portals. Highlights on the wish list
include:

  • Top Benefit Faster turnaround time (processing) was cited by
73% of the agents as the top benefit they expect to realize from a
    commercial-line carriers real-time interface.
  • Key Functionality 73% percent of agents said it was very
important/useful for carriers to provide real-time feedback and
quoting; another 24% said such functionality was somewhat important.
  • Agency Connectivity – 84% of agents surveyed said that
cost-free instant upload from their desktops to the carrier,
regardless of agency management system, would be incredibly useful.
  • Most Valued Feature – Indicating speed is of the essence, 72%
ranked real-time quoting from carriers as the feature they would
most value in an agent portal, followed by straight through processing
    (submit to quote to bind).
  • Insurance Exchange – 16% said they currently submit business
through an insurance-industry agent-carrier exchange. Another 61% are
very interested in/plan to use an exchange.

What can a carrier do to increase use of their agency portal? A quarter
of respondents checked off increase frequency of on-site training and
another quarter felt a rewards program would be a great incentive

They use fewer words and have

They use fewer words
and have more power. By holding your attention and getting
to the point, they’re more effective communicators.

People listen much faster than you speak. Unless you’re really
holding someone’s attention, the tendency is for their thoughts
to wander to other things. Here’s three things to keep in mind
to help you become more succinct:

1. The Bottom Line

These days, we expect information to be delivered quickly. Younger people, especially, have short attention spans. We
may not like this, but that’s the way it is.

It’s up to us to deliver our messages in a succinct, interesting
and compelling fashion. We have to GET attention, HOLD
attention and make our request or our point QUICKLY.

Snow makes for a white Easter

Merry Christmas everybo… oh, hang on.

Yes, for the benefit of those of you who went away for the bank holiday weekend, Bedfordshire woke up to a fleeting, but very definite, morning of snow on Easter Sunday.

While the best, or worst, of the white stuff had gone by midday, eager Bedfordians headed to Bedford Park to make the most of the weather while it lasted.

The Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway was postponed for 24 hours because of the unseasonal weather.

More than 20,000 drag racing spectators were expected to see the first round of the National Drag Racing Championships, but the event had to be put off until Easter Monday.

Woburn Safari Park also closed to visitors for a day.

If you go down to the pub today

IT IS early on Tuesday evening, and Tam is on his way home from work. He checks his watch. No harm in popping into the local. After all, it’s on the way.

He pushes open the door of the pub he has been drinking in for the best part of three decades, and takes his usual barstool among the usual faces.

They jabber contentedly, discussion swirling between politics, weather forecasts and that referee at the weekend

To kick off a healthier you, try raw food

0 Comments | Bismarck Tribune, Jan 13, 2010 | by ANDREAWEIGL

After holiday gluttony, many of us resolve to lose weight in the New Year.

Christie Kellogg wants to suggest a new approach to eating for permanent weight loss: raw food.

Kellogg, 41, a Raleigh, N.C., dental hygienist, teaches raw food cooking classes. A raw food diet focuses on eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and sprouted greens in their natural state.

In other words, no cooked foods, or “dead” food, as raw foodists call them. Cooked foods, Kellogg explains, have fewer nutrients and enzymes than raw foods.

So why do you need to attend a cooking class when you don’t cook these foods? Well, if all you ate were carrot sticks and salads as part of a raw food diet, you’d give up this diet quicker than you did Atkins, the cookie diet or the grapefruit diet.

In a raw food diet, Kellogg explains, marinating replaces cooking as a way to make these foods tasty while still retaining the health benefits. Her seminars include a one-hour lecture and three hours of hands-on food preparation. Everyone goes home with a soaking chart, 50 recipes and a list for stocking the kitchen.

Kellogg says she started eating a raw food diet about six years ago. She was 20 pounds heavier and lethargic. After adopting a raw food diet, she lost the weight, wore clothes she wore in high school and had more energy.

Kellogg does not believe a raw food diet has to be all or nothing. She believes any amount of raw food in your diet is beneficial. “It’s everyone’s own journey,” Kellogg says.
